What is Black History Month?

A celebration of the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians to the history and culture of Canada.

The Ontario Black History Society was created in 1978 and petitioned the City of Toronto to have February become Black History Month.

In December 1995 the House of Canada officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by Dr. Jean Augustine the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.

While Black history is of course celebrated every day it is particularly emphasized during February in Canada. We honour those in our beautiful Black diaspora who've made our history so rich and vibrant and we celebrate all of us who continue the legacy today and beyond!
